This book is full of the mystery, fantasy, and just plain enjoyment that I love in a book. The story is slowly revealed and the characters are diverse and make a splendid tapestry of a world that we can not see. The magic, mayhem, and romance make for a wonderful read. Do not miss this one it is one of the best by this author.

The author makes reference to several of her other novels and characters from those novels and short stories are intergal to this novel. The main character of Lannes is based on the short story in DARK DREAMERS. Agatha and Charles, Lannes brother are the stars in that short story. The short story called, A Dream of Stone and Shadow. Lethe or Alice, is a main character in SOUL SONG. Togather they give us a wonderful romance.

Lannes is a gargoyle, he is also a bookbinder. He learned the skill from a friend of his father's who was human. After the events in, A Dream of Stone and Shadow, he has become a recluse. He is only in town to bind a book for a dear friend. Having closed off his heart he is undone by the thoughts and feelings for the waif he saves off the street.

Lethe, only gets a name very late in the story. She has lost all memory and woke up in a hotel room that is on fire with three dead men on the floor. Only a note pinned to her blouse says "RUN" so shoeless and nameless she finds her way out of the burning hotel and onto the street.

Lannes and Lethe are led or chased across the country. Until men from The Dirke and Steele Agency find them. Lannes brother works for the agency and he sends Koni and Richter to help his brother and protect him from the woman he has decided to help. They think she may be connected to the same women who tortured Lannes and his brothers.

Lethe may not have a memory but her mind is not her own. She has a rider who is determined to kill the people who killed her daughter. But nothing is as it seems and none of the answers are easy to find.

I loved it.

OK, she's hooked me! This is the third book I've read in Marjorie M Liu's seductive Dirk & Steele series and I find myself hungry for more. I enjoy her characters immensely. Ms. Liu's storylines pull you in and take you on a wild ride indeed. A satisfying paranormal story with delectable romance woven in. Thumbs up. And now I need another one of books to read.
STORY BRIEF
Lethe awakes in a hotel room with three dead men on the floor. She has no memory of anything that happened in her life up until that moment, not even her name. She sees a note pinned to her clothes saying "run." She does. She is barefoot and covered in blood and trying to steal a car. Lannes sees her and helps her. He travels with her to help solve her mystery. Lannes is a gargoyle who uses magic to give him a human appearance.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
Ok but I wouldn't recommend buying it. The first half was pretty good, but I was losing interest during the last half. The characters and plot were interesting. I was intrigued with the mystery around Lethe, which gets solved in the end. But I didn't like the way people left clues for Lethe to travel somewhere, when they could have just given her some answers. A second problem was the way all the different characters were connected or related in the end, too contrived for me. And last, there not enough emotional pull. I didn't feel anything. Mystery fans and urban fantasy fans will like this more than I did. I prefer feeling something rather than satisfying my curiosity over the mystery.

I'm not going to give a synopsis on what this book is about, there are other great reviewers out there that have already done that. I gave this book 4 stars based on the mystery itself. The romance was a bit lacking to me and I really didn't feel any emotional connection to the heroine and hero in this book.

Yes they both suffered but, they just didn't move me. The mystery was good enough for me but, the story did tend to drag somewhat. When I can usually finish a book in 1 day it took me 3 to finish. I kept putting it down, I was having a hard time with the whole whoa is me scenerios. I'm actually waiting for Rictor and Koni's story but, I guess we are going to be waiting a while for those
Thisis the first book written by Ms. Liu I have read. Out of thousands of books I've read, this one is a small jewel. And it is still my favorite after reading some of her other work, which is excellent. It has it all an actual story line, tri-dimensional characters, action, mystery, love, sex, and much more. Lannes is a humanoid that is compassionate, passionate, strong and yes believable, and Lethe is a woman who is also a real person; plus their relationship makes you crave for more. The chemistry between them is just intense, and the tension between the two just calls for a release. Who would think a gargoyle could be a sexy creature, one more likeable and desirable than a vampire? I hope Ms. Liu writes the stories of all his other brothers. It also brings Rictor, once again, presented in a previous book, a character that I hope gets his woman (Elena) in a later book. I would recommend this book to those who crave for a good book not just a paranormal romance novel, and especially if you want a smart book that happens to have paranormal romance to excite our imagination. I just wish she would get rid of the funky book covers...
