In the fast-paced psychological thriller traditions of Gillian Flynn, Jessica Knoll, and Liane Moriarty, Edgar Award nominated-author Kathryn Haines Miller (The Girl Is Murder) spins an engrossing tale of what might be the worst birthday ever.
Helen’s life is simple. She has a job. She has a boyfriend. She has her weekly NA meetings. No drugs, no drinking, no sex, not even any caffeine—not anymore. Because Helen knows this once you’re an addict, you’re always an addict. There is no such thing as recovered.
And on her thirtieth birthday, the stability she’s cobbled together for herself will vanish. A call from the police, a body found, a dead woman with Helen’s name in her back pocket—it’s all so hard to believe. But then when Helen finds out the victim was her childhood best friend, a girl who went missing in high school, it’s too much.
Helen knows she has to stick to the routine that keeps her in control, and with the way the police are eyeing her for this, she’s worried about looking suspicious. But the unfortunate reemergence of her old friend—and the mysteries that always surrounded her—means Helen can trust no one, not even herself.
The Girl from Yesterday eBook Kathryn Miller Haines
If you’re into the Mystery genre you might want to think about giving this a chance. Haines has provided a well-crafted story on the life of an addict which starts off slow but provides some detailed world and character building including the all-important backstory.Haines did a respectful job in providing a decently accurate life of a recovering addict who is trying to fight her addiction to stay clean and build back trust with herself and others. Beyond the standard mystery genre, the author has added an element of psychological suspense with plenty of twists as you try to discover truth from fiction.
That ending was definitely worth pushing through to get to as Haines did not disappoint with her in-depth examination of the drug culture, the efforts one will go to for their addiction, and how fighting against relapse is a daily battle that never ends.

The Girl from Yesterday eBook Kathryn Miller Haines Reviews
Very good couldn't put it down
Awesome book. Great author. Waiting for the next one!
Just not that this book is NOT part of her earlier series. A stand alone book.
You'll be rooting for Helen to solve an old mystery and save herself at the same time . I couldn't put it down.
This story was a nailbiter from start to finish. While another reviewer said the main character, Helen, was unlikable, I found her to be an intriguing woman with a past - she's got her demons, but she's fighting them with all she's got.
The story moves along at a brisk pace, tying half-forgotten childhood memories in with more adult discoveries. I was unable to put the story down!
Ms. Haines is a talented writer, and I look forward to her next story!
Didn't care for it so much in the beginning. Didn't like the main character. But -- the second half of the read was very exciting, suspenseful, and had me guessing; it made up for the beginning and I couldn't put it down until finished. Ended up liking the characters and the read very much.
Kathryn Miller Haines is such a skilled writer that she hooks you not only with a story which careens around switchback curves at downhill ski speed, but also delves so deeply into Helen's character that it is laid bare for you. I couldn't put 'The Girl from Yesterday' down. I went from disliking Helen to rooting for her to find Carrie's killer, and in the process, to find herself and the footing she needed to move ahead at the end. About halfway through the novel, I jotted down my list of suspects. I was sure one of them would turn out to be the killer, but to Ms Haines' credit as a master plotter, the killer's name was no where on my list.
