For me this complex and compelling drama can be summed up in one word:CHOICES
It shows us that any choice a person makes,is, what they feel is the correct choice. But we don't know it is the right choice in life until the consequences of the choice has fully evolved into circumstances.
The Amish man who sought the world of the 'English' was his choice.
For Jeremy Stull, his choice was always Ironwood summer Camp and then as a young man, working there in the summer. He will later examine this choice and it's consequences.
His choice was also to study and live with an Amish family and learn about them and specifically the BANS; in order to write his doctorate.
But he had to make the choice of a lifetime when a 14year old camper, called Max attends camp.Max is a street-wise,young man with attitude and a seductive charm that affects Jeremy in unexpected ways.
Jeremy had to confront his own desires regarding Max. He became besotted with Max, looking for him, wanting to know all about him..waiting for an opportunity to touch him.
Jeremy Stull made a choice that impacted not only his life, and everything he thought he knew about Ironwood.
There is so much in this story it is hard to pin it down to readable synopsis. The surprising turn of events in the camp always juxtaposed with the Amish woman, Beulah and her life now. Consequences of choices.
Lowenthal manages to convey to the reader the desire, the want the sexual urges that Jeremy had toward Max.
In the end, Jeremy made many choices regarding Max, the camp and those that he grew up with. Ultimately he made the choice of a lifetime. Was it right or wrong? Was it correct or ill-fated? Only time will tell.
I ached for Jeremy. I ached for Max. I ached for the camp.I ached for Beulah, the amish woman who also made a choice.
Excellent story! Detailed writing but never boring. So much to think about! Kudos to Lowenthal for writing about a sensitive subject in a brilliantly!

In a word EXCELLENT.
In a few words This is one of those rare novels in what we call the gay literature that is both a page-turner and a serious novel with serious themes. It raises a number of important questions What is child abuse? Is consentual physicality between an adult and a minor always wrong? Are the parameters of behavior set by a society always in the best interest of the individual?
The writing is elegant, with poetic traces in the use of language. Although it is at times a bit overdramatic, Lowenthal's style is lean. His writing is direct and to the point, and always evocative of the deep feelings that the characters experience in their moral dilemmas.
This one is not for airheads at the poolside.
This is a novel of great promise. The theme is unusual and good, and the plot seems noteworthy. The story or stories begin well with setting up differing scenes, and the reader looks forward to being drawn into the major dynamic as a seemingly engaging novel unfolds. As a reader finishes the book, the story has been okay, possibly less than expected. Possibly this reader was disappointed because of reading a similar theme and plot provided excellently by Reyonlds Price.

By no means was this an inferior tale. Rather, I found it annoying. Too often it seemed unfocused, or simply not as well edited as it could have been. When an author develops a story that one usually has a particular audience in mind. I am not sure who the intended audience is for this tome.

In the process of reading a seemingly ordinary tale about events which formed human lives, I stumbled too often over words that did not seem to match the tone, nor flow. Usually, I would give kudos to an excellent and enticing use of unusual words, but in the context of the flow of this story they seemed contrived and artificial, actually taking away from connection with the event. If I received this story from a student I would be inclined to suggest words that add more feeling, more clarification of events and characters, rather than a demonstration of vocabulary skills. Uniquely, in this volume words took away from connection, rather than deepening. Again, a reader might easily wonder for whom the story is intended.

At one point in the story, a main character almost behaves in a way that could be destructive. Other events and revelations reshape the near encounter. This situation had the potential to be a peak experience, but it is not. It is simply a limpid telling of a near-tragedy, and all too quickly moves on, albeit with some implications. Re-editing this story might place this adventure at the very beginning of the story -- with moving backward and forward from that pivotal point.

I do not want to discourage anyone from reading this novel. Its worth a try, for sure. For me, it would entertain and inform best if read by a book club rather than alone. Differing opinions and reactions to the story might revive that which seems to go flat; and could provide a stimulating dialogue regarding the difference between art and an okay tale.

MAGIS, always MAGIS.

There wasn't a wasted word or idea in this novel, everything built exquistely to the finale line. Whoever you may be, if you've ever longed, loved, or ached for someone, you can find that pictured here. At times like a memoir of vivid experiences at a summer camp for boys, at other times a suspensful story that kept me turning the pages. Yet so beautifully told I didn't want to reach the end. Lowenthal writes compassionately about people, that takes wisdom as well as writing skills.
I have also immesely enjoyed Michael Lowenthal's "The Paternity Test" and "The Same Embrace." I wanted very much to read "Avoidance" so I ordered it by post since it is no longer available on . Worth the wait.
I'm not sure I liked this book but once I started I wanted to know what happens next. This a story that relates to why I dropped out of the scouts when I became aware of sexual attractions. I found as I grew up that I wasn't the only guy to have the same fears. I felt sorry for the legacy this story exploits. In our world of sexual molestation, this book gave us some in sight into that behavior. Well written, but a sad story.
