What a refreshingly different fantasy story!

I’m so tired of dragons and am so over the magic that characters can resort to or call upon in countless other fantasy tales.

How pleasant to find myself getting caught up in a story that—although categorised as fantasy because the setting is a medieval otherworld—has its feet firmly planted in reality. Yes, there is a goddess, but there has been and still are many different religions on Earth, so why not in Cara’s world.

This is the first novel by Chantel Seabrook of which I’m aware and if she keeps on the path she’s taken with Cara’s twelve then I see myself reading more of her work when published.

The story arc is good, taking us from the moment Cara learns of a new fate that awaits her, following her through the trials and obstacles she must overcome before finally reaching that destiny.

Seabrook is economical with detail and descriptions and at times I felt myself wanting more depth. But better to err on the side of keeping your readers wanting than to bore them with too much.

I liked the characterisation. There are the bad guys as well as the good. One comment I have is that the good guys are portrayed as very human with weaknesses as well as strengths, but the bad guys are devoid of any redeeming features. But in such a setting and timeframe, and given the prize everyone is after, I suppose it’s not unbelievable for villains to be so completely single-mindedly rapacious.

Use of language and dialogue are good. The use of modern day speech in the dialogue—such as ‘Piss off’—threw me the first few times but I ended up accepting it as the familiar terms let me know exactly what the characters were feeling.

And if you like sex scenes then Cara’s twelve won’t disappoint. I always wonder what an author’s motivation is for including explicit sex. Is it just to reach a wider readership than the book otherwise would? Or is the sex integral to the story? I think Seabrook could put up a sound argument for the latter in this case. It would be spoiling the story to give much detail but how Cara handles her relations with the Twelve is crucial to the story, and sex is very much part of the relationships.

The one criticism I have is the number of misspellings and other errors throughout. The book is a good read, but it would be preferable not to have to skip over these. But don’t let this put you off. Cara’s twelve is worth the hours you spend between the covers.

Cara Twelve Chantel Seabrook 9781514725498 Books Reviews

Reading until dawn! Wow. I was barely able to put this book down for a second after the first few pages got me completely hooked. Characters you will love and hate jump out of the pages in a weaving plot that is treacherous, deeply romantic, imaginative, and above all, entertaining. Cara, queen to be, is set forth on a mission to visit the twelve provinces of Elbia; each with a chivalrous swordsman seeking her hand. Or are they chivalrous?

Deceit, gallantry, and suspense reign as Cara makes her journey through this whimsical land, encounters dangers, and has to grapple with various life choices. She grows personally as she tackles one adventure and peril after another. The medieval setting is portrayed beautifully, including all the romanticism, honor, corruption, and greed associated with those times. Vivid descriptions and action placed me right into the pages.

Chantel Seabrook’s narrative is intimate, dramatic, hugely imaginative, and incredibly compelling. Overall, I can’t say enough about this novel and the storytelling style. I think this book is destined to become one of the great fantasy stories written in the past fifty years.
I just spent several hours reading what I consider one of the finest fantasy novels in print.

Cara's Twelve is fantasy, romance, action, suspense and adventure. It is the story of Cara who is suddenly made the Heir Apparent of Elbia. Elbia is made of twelve provinces ruled by a Goddess-Queen and her King Consort. Cara's aunt, the current queen, holds power by concentrating the country's wealth in a few of the provinces and allowing the rest to fall into ruin. The queen's daughter is declared ineligible to rule so the only remaining member of the royal is Cara.

Forced away from her home, Cara become Heir Apparent and must make a pilgrimage to each of the 12 provinces escorted by twelve sworn men, one from each province. At the end of the journey she will become the Queen-Goddess and she will choose one of the 12 men to become her King-Consort.

The only problem is that the current queen has no intention of giving up her power. Cara thwarts the current queen and makes the pilgrimage so she can ascend the throne. Even though the 12 men are oath bound to her, they have a different agenda. While some rally around Cara, some are arrayed against her.

I have been reading fantasy for forty years and I can say I enjoyed Cara's Twelve as much as I enjoyed the work of any author I have read. Her style of writing is similar to C.J.Cherryh and Mercedes Lackey. Ms. Seabrook handles her world building with ease and her characterizations are multi-dimensional. I was so caught up in the story, I had to stop at one point and put it aside to remind myself it was just a story. I haven't had that experience in a long time.

Can this be read as a stand alone? Yes. Will it be a series? I certainly hope so. The story is primed for a sequel, perhaps two but this book can be read as a stand alone. I usually complain about the filler necessary to make trilogy. Ms. Seabrook could have added another 50,000 words and fleshed out the story even more with no problems. Is the story great at the current word count? Yes, it is.

There are a few proofreading mistakes bu,t considering this is self-published, it is professionally well written and well edited. It is for those over 18 as there are several well written sex scenes but I didn't feel overwhelmed by it. It has fantasy-type violence but not too much. On the whole it is well balanced between the genres.

I look forward to seeing the next volume of Cara's story. I highly recommend this book.
